Hun, from your description, I can't really tell if you have an actual hair colour (ie. black, brown, blonde, red) or a sandy shade of hair (not really a colour).
If you have an actually brown colour, get highlights. Try mixing it up with highlights and lowlights! Hair is fun to play with! =)

If you have a sandy shade of hair, opt for dying your hair. Going lighter means you'll have to bleach it (not healthy!) so if you want, go darker (like a creamy brunette)

Well I cant put a pic up right now, but I have dark brown hair and had my sister in law dye a peekaboo in my hair with platinum blonde color. I think it looks very bold. If ur going for something a bit more mellow try blonde highlights, or whatever color. Over the years Ive done almost all u can do to ur hair. lol.

Black hair: blonde
Brown; blonde 2 and other colors.
