maybe you could do something like using an eye for the sight part and a heart instead of the word

The best you could probably shorten it to would be -
Not in sight, but in heart

You could do two lines though. Or one on each wrist?

I am sorry for your loss.

You could also just have: '...in my heart'
or 'always with me'
or 'always'
or you could actually have a small heart, and put his name, or whatever you called him, or an endearment inside the heart.
Here's a font site:

I would keep whatever you decide delicate in line, and would request a 'fine line' needle also.

luck~

Why can't you just wrote underneath each word ? That's a pretty short quote . I don't think you can shorten any further .

If you try to shorten it to much it will take the meaning away...I would say either get it in a different place, or have it in two different lines one on top of the other...it doesn't necessarily have to be in one long line
