I think you lack colour and your hair is very, very dark so I would personally make your slightly grown out fringe side parted, because that's on trend.

Then I'd use a really simple product through the length of your hair to catch the flyaways and tame any frizz like John Freda Frizz Ease Serum. It doesn't have to be that brand and there are cheaper ones out there but they will give your hair shape and can be rubbed through it in the morning really easily, removing any loose bits and taming the wilderness.

For colour, I'd say you should bleach a section near your face just at one side which is very modern, or get some highlights and low lights. You don't seem to wear make up and you have a pale complexion so dark hair against pale skin looks unexciting. More colour in the hair and a bit more shape and neatness and it would look great.

I think some 90's Natalie Imbruglia side-swept bangs would look lovely though and don't be scared of adding a few clips or pins to keep it all in place.

Personally Id say just leave it the way it is. Maybe grow it out a bit longer. Ponytails definetly work. I think your hairs beautiful as it is ;) o and ignore the jackasses that are insulting you, there probably just jealous ugly assholes who dont have a life.
